Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
This role involves delivering high-quality tuition in English and Mathematics to learners of varying ages and abilities within the South West England region. The tutor supports learners in developing their skills, knowledge, and confidence, helping them to achieve their academic goals and improve their performance in examinations or assessments. The position requires a flexible approach to working hours, strong subject knowledge, and the ability to tailor teaching methods to individual learner needs.
Job Duties
- Plan, prepare and deliver engaging and effective tuition sessions in English and Mathematics aligned with learners’ needs and curriculum requirements.
- Assess learners’ current abilities and identify areas for improvement through diagnostic testing and ongoing evaluation.
- Develop personalised learning plans that address individual strengths and weaknesses.
- Provide constructive feedback to learners and encourage positive attitudes towards learning.
- Monitor and record learner progress, maintaining accurate records in line with organisational policies.
- Support learners in preparing for examinations and assessments, including functional skills, GCSE, or equivalent qualifications.
- Adapt teaching approaches to accommodate different learning styles and any additional support needs.
- Maintain professional standards and uphold safeguarding policies to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Communicate effectively with learners, parents or guardians where appropriate, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Attend training sessions and team meetings as required to maintain and develop professional knowledge and skills.
Required Qualifications
- Recognised qualification in English and Mathematics teaching or tutoring at Level 3 or above.
- Evidence of recent experience delivering tuition in English and Mathematics.
- Qualification in teaching, tutoring, or education, such as a Certificate in Education, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or equivalent.
Education
- Minimum of GCSE grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent qualifications).
- Further academic qualifications in English, Mathematics, or Education are desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience of tutoring or teaching English and Mathematics to learners in a one-to-one or small group setting.
- Experience working with learners of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Familiarity with the curriculum and examination requirements relevant to English and Mathematics at secondary school level or equivalent.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong subject knowledge in English and Mathematics.
- Ability to assess learners’ needs accurately and plan effective learning activities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage and motivate learners.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively in a flexible working environment.
- Competency in using digital tools and resources to support learning and assessment.
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status.
- Experience of working within further education or adult learning environments.
- Training or experience in supporting learners with additional needs or English as an additional language.
Working Conditions
- The role is temporary and part-time, with hours negotiated based on learner demand and availability.
- Work takes place predominantly in educational settings within Gloucestershire, Swindon, and surrounding areas.
- Some travel within the region may be required to reach learners in various locations.
- Flexible working hours may include evenings and weekends to accommodate learners’ schedules.
- The tutor is expected to maintain appropriate professional conduct and adhere to organisational safeguarding and health and safety policies.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
