Job description

EAL Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel are recruiting EAL Teaching Assistants to work in secondary schools across south Manchester from May 2026 until the end of the academic year or September 2026 start. The Manchester South Secondary team partners with schools in Tameside, central Manchester, South Manchester and Stockport, with these particular vacancies based in Old Trafford and South Manchester.

This role is ideal for speakers of different languages and those passionate about supporting young people who are developing their English language skills and may be new to the UK education system.

Role Overview

  • Provide targeted support to pupils with English as an Additional Language
  • Deliver small-group interventions or 1:1 sessions focusing on vocabulary, reading, writing and speaking skills
  • Assist the class teacher in adapting resources and learning activities for EAL learners
  • Help pupils access the curriculum by simplifying language and reinforcing key concepts
  • Contribute to maintaining good behaviour and a positive, inclusive learning environment
  • For September 2026 start – applicants must be available for interviews or school trials in June/July

Location: Secondary schools in Old Trafford and South Manchester
Pay: £14.25 an hour
Contract: Full-time, term-time only

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience working with young people or multilingual learners is desirable
  • Strong communication skills, with clear spoken English
  • Patience, empathy, and an inclusive approach to supporting learners
  • Organised, proactive, and able to follow guidance from teaching staff
  • A genuine interest in education, language development, or future teacher training

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
