Job description

Teaching Personnel are seeking a confident and adaptable Cover Supervisor to join a well-regarded secondary school in Portsmouth. This full-time position provides an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain valuable classroom experience or those considering a future career in teaching.

About the Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will provide general cover for classes of 11–16-year-olds when the teacher is absent, ensuring students remain engaged with the pre-prepared learning materials. You will help maintain a positive, well-managed learning environment across a range of subjects. The role also includes a small amount of support for pupils with special educational needs (SEN).

Key Responsibilities

You will deliver and oversee pre-set lesson plans across various subjects and manage classroom behaviour in line with school policies. A key part of the role is keeping students focused, engaged and productive throughout the lesson. You will offer appropriate support to SEN pupils when needed and provide feedback to teaching staff regarding student behaviour and progress.

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have experience working with secondary-aged students, ideally with some exposure to supporting pupils with SEN. You should be confident managing a classroom and able to respond flexibly to different situations. Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive rapport with students are essential, along with a genuine enthusiasm for supporting young learners and contributing to their education.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
