KEY PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

To support the academic, social and emotional development of children, and provide them with opportunities to make improvements in their learning, behaviour and social skills.

KEY TASKS

  • Establish supportive and positive relationships with children across the school, promoting respect, self-esteem and a positive, inclusive whole school ethos;
  • Promote, encourage and reinforce children’s self-esteem in line with the school Behaviour Policy;
  • Take a leading role in aspects of planning, preparation and delivery of specific aspects of the curriculum;
  • Support teachers in designing and delivering the curriculum, including help with planning group and individual work programmes (i.e. Individual Education Plans) and reviewing work activities;
  • Contribute to assessment and record keeping;
  • Supervise children to ensure standards of work and behaviour are maintained;
  • Support the schools’ aims, values and policies.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • As directed by the class teacher, support children in their learning both in individually and in groups by:
    • Clarifying and explaining instructions;
    • Ensuring the child is able to use equipment and materials provided;
    • Supporting and developing the independence of learners;
    • Motivating and encouraging children as required;
    • Helping children to achieve their targets and learning outcomes;
    • Support children by refocusing them if they become unsettled;
    • Meeting social, emotional and physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence;
    • Devising learning activities, in liaison with the class teacher;
    • Preparing learning materials (e.g. web searches, photocopying, laminating);
    • Monitor and report information of pupil progress academically, socially and emotionally to the class teacher, including maintaining records and contributing to reviews;
    • Working 1:1 or in small groups with pupils;
    • Develop knowledge and understanding of specific academic, physical and emotional/behavioural needs of individuals and groups of children within school and respond to them effectively;
    • Encourage and support good behaviour by acting as a positive role model and dealing with challenging behaviour in accordance with school policies and following appropriate training;
    • In consultation with the teaching staff, to liaise with parents and other agencies to discuss the behaviour and progress in respect of individual children.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the class teacher/senior leadership and through release time, prepare and provide in class behaviour support across the whole school;
  • Under the overall direction of the class teacher, take sole responsibility for groups of children or whole classes for periods of time;
  • Attend and contribute to meetings in respect of pupil progress or welfare;
  • Act as a group leader for various off site activities and visits, as appropriate and as directed by the class teacher;
  • Support visiting students, volunteers and TAs from other schools as required.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
