Youth Worker – SEMH Provision

Teaching Personnel is seeking a confident and proactive Youth Worker to support pupils within a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) provision in Failsworth.

This role is ideal for individuals with a background in youth work, coaching, or mentoring who are looking to apply their skills within an educational setting. You will play a key part in supporting pupils who require additional guidance to engage in learning and manage their behaviour positively.

The Role

As a Youth Worker, you will work closely with teaching staff to support pupils both in and out of the classroom. Your role will mirror that of a Teaching Assistant, with a strong focus on behaviour, emotional support, and engagement.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting with classroom activities and adapting tasks to meet individual needs
  • Using proactive behaviour management strategies to maintain engagement
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and de-escalation
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and social interaction
  • Building strong, professional relationships with pupils
  • Maintaining clear boundaries with confidence and consistency
  • Supporting the teacher with lesson delivery and general classroom support
  • Helping create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Monitoring progress and contributing to support plans

About the Provision

This SEMH setting supports pupils who may display:

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Barriers to mainstream education

The provision takes a trauma-informed approach, focusing on structure, consistency, and building trust to help pupils achieve positive outcomes.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, or behaviour support
  • A confident and proactive approach to supporting pupils
  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • Ability to remain calm and resilient in challenging situations
  • Passion for working with vulnerable young people

Desirable:

  • Experience within an SEMH provision or alternative setting
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to complete)
  • Understanding of SEMH needs and trauma-informed practice
