Youth Support Assistant
Job description
Youth Support Assistant (PRU)
Location: Caerphilly
Hours: Part-Time | Term Time Only | Monday–Friday, 08:30 – 15:00
Pay: £110 per day
Start Date: 5th of Janurary
Are you resilient, compassionate, and ready to make a real impact?
We’re looking for confident, proactive Youth Support Workers to join a KS3–KS4 Pupil Referral Unit in Caerphilly. This is a unique and rewarding role supporting young people who need an alternative approach to learning — those who may struggle in mainstream education and thrive through structure, trust, and positive relationships.
About the PRU
It’s a lovely little base in Caerphilly with a genuinely supportive team. You’ll be joining a small, dedicated staff group working within a nurturing and inclusive Pupil Referral Unit. The team is committed to helping every student re-engage with learning, develop positive behaviour, and build the confidence they need to succeed.
Classes are small, the approach is personal, and every day brings new challenges — and new rewards.
Your Role
As a Youth Support Assistant, you’ll be a key part of the team supporting young people aged 11–16 who present with a range of social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
Your role combines mentoring, behaviour management, and classroom support — helping students build trust, stay focused, and reach their potential.
You’ll:
• Support teaching staff with classroom management and lesson delivery
• Build positive, consistent relationships with students based on respect and trust
• Use de-escalation strategies and restorative approaches to manage behaviour
• Promote emotional wellbeing, resilience, and positive communication
• Encourage participation in both academic and vocational activities
• Act as a role model — demonstrating patience, consistency, and empathy every day
Experience working in a PRU, alternative provision, or behaviour support setting is desirable — but not essential. A background in sports, care, youth leadership, or coaching is equally valuable.
Why You’ll Love It
• Work in a supportive, close-knit team where every day makes a difference
• Gain experience in specialist education and SEMH support
• Access high-quality training in:
o De-escalation & Behaviour Management (TeamTeach, Thrive, Pivotal)
o Safeguarding & Child Protection
o Trauma-Informed Practice
o SEND & Mental Health Awareness
• Weekdays only, term time hours — great work–life balance
• Clear progression routes into teaching, SEN, youth justice, or social care
