Exciting New Opportunities in a Growing Specialist School

A specialist school in Salisbury is expanding its provision with the opening of four new classrooms and is looking to recruit enthusiastic and dedicated Teaching Assistants to join its team from September.

The school supports children and young people aged 4–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and a range of associated learning, communication, and behavioural challenges. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive and rewarding environment where every day brings the chance to make a meaningful difference in a young person's life.

About the Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work across the school, supporting pupils of varying ages and abilities. You will play a vital role in helping students access learning, develop confidence, regulate emotions, and achieve positive outcomes both academically and socially.

The role requires individuals who can build strong, trusting relationships with young people, remain calm under pressure, and provide consistent support to students who may present with challenging behaviours or complex needs.

No two days are the same, and flexibility is essential. You may support students within the classroom, during interventions, on educational activities, or through moments of emotional dysregulation where patience and understanding are key.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support students in accessing learning activities both individually and in small groups.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging and differentiated lessons.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and support students in developing emotional regulation skills.
  • Build meaningful and professional relationships with pupils to promote engagement and trust.
  • Support students with social development, communication skills, and independence.
  • Help maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, parents, and external professionals.
  • Adapt your approach to meet the individual needs of each student.

Who We Are Looking For

Previous school-based experience is advantageous but not essential. We are keen to hear from individuals who have experience working with children or young people in a variety of settings and who can bring transferable skills to the role.

Applications are particularly welcomed from:

  • Experienced Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants.
  • Former military personnel looking to transition into education.
  • Youth workers and community support workers.
  • Sports coaches and activity leaders.
  • Residential childcare workers.
  • Individuals with experience supporting children and young people in care, mentoring, or similar settings.

Essential Qualities

The successful candidate will be:

  • Confident supporting and managing challenging behaviour.
  • Able to build positive and professional relationships with young people.
  • Resilient, patient, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Adaptable and able to respond positively to changing situations.
  • A strong team player who is willing to learn and develop.
  • Passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to education.
  • Someone with a positive outlook and a good sense of humour.

What the School Offers

  • The opportunity to join an expanding specialist provision during an exciting period of growth.
  • A supportive and collaborative staff team.
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • The chance to make a genuine impact on the lives of children and young people with additional needs.
  • A varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.
  • A welcoming environment that values commitment, creativity, and compassion.
