Special Needs Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel are seeking a Special Needs Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a specialist school in Knaresborough.

Pupils attend school from Early Years through to Year 11 (3-16).  There are currently 150 pupils on site who have a range of additional learning needs including:

• Moderate Learning Difficulties
• Severe Learning Difficulties
• Complex Medical Difficulties
• Downs Syndrome
• Autism
• Hearing and Visual Impairments
• Physical Disabilities

90% of pupils also have a Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The school has received status as a Specialist College for Communication and Interaction and this plays a large part in the work undertaken by staff in school. You will be required to work with colleagues to create a positive and safe atmosphere where pupils interact with each other, with staff and with the wider community. Pupils are encouraged to respect themselves and others as they strive for excellence in all that they do both academically and personally.

As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils to access learning activities, ensuring they are appropriately challenged and able to meet their expected levels of progress. You will also contribute to the ethos of the school and will offer pastoral support to pupils across all key stages. Due to the nature of pupil needs, you may also be required to support pupils with personal care and/or feeding during mealtimes. Some pupils use a mechanical system of communication, so experience using PECS and/or Makaton is desirable but not essential.

You will be fully supported by a large staff team of specialist teachers, learning support assistants, medical staff and an established Senior Leadership Team. You must have previous experience working with young people with Special Educational Needs within an education or health care setting.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
