Special Educational Needs Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor provides tailored educational support to children and young people with a range of additional learning needs. The role involves delivering personalised teaching sessions that address individual learning requirements, promoting progress and confidence in academic and social skills. The tutor works closely with schools, families, and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to the learner’s development.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver individual or small group tuition sessions that accommodate the specific needs of learners with special educational needs.
- Assess learners’ abilities and needs through observation, discussion, and formal assessments to inform personalised learning plans.
- Develop and implement strategies that support learning, communication, and behaviour management in accordance with best practise guidance.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of learner progress, adapting teaching approaches as necessary.
- Collaborate with schools, families, therapists, and other relevant professionals to support the learner’s educational development.
- Provide regular feedback to parents or carers and contribute to review meetings when required.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching methods and resources, making recommendations for improvements.
- Keep up to date with current legislation, policies, and best practises in special educational needs provision.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment at all times.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification such as a recognised teaching certificate or diploma.
- Specialist training or certification in special educational needs provision or related areas.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or equivalent clearance.
Education
- A degree or equivalent qualification in education, psychology, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Continued professional development in special educational needs strategies and interventions.
Experience
- Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs in an educational or supportive setting.
- Experience in delivering one-to-one or small group tuition tailored to individual learning requirements.
- Familiarity with a range of SEN conditions and appropriate teaching methods.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of special educational needs frameworks and relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage learners and liaise effectively with families and professionals.
- Ability to design and adapt learning materials to suit diverse needs and abilities.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive approach to supporting learners’ development.
- Organisational skills to manage schedules, records, and reporting efficiently.
- Competency in using digital tools and resources to enhance learning experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Further qualifications in specialised areas such as speech and language support, autism spectrum conditions, or dyslexia.
- Training in behaviour management techniques.
- Experience working within mainstream or special schools.
Working Conditions
- The role is primarily based within educational settings or the learner’s home environment in Oxfordshire and surrounding areas.
- Part-time hours with flexibility to accommodate learners’ availability and needs.
- Occasional travel between locations within the South East region.
- The position involves direct interaction with children and young people requiring additional support.
- The role may require adherence to health and safety policies and safeguarding procedures.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
