Special Educational Needs Tutor

Job Description

The Special Educational Needs Tutor supports learners who require additional assistance to access the curriculum effectively. The role involves planning and delivering personalised learning programmes tailored to individual needs and abilities. The tutor works closely with learners to develop their skills, confidence and independence in an inclusive learning environment. The position demands effective communication with learners, families and educational professionals to monitor progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess learners’ individual educational needs and identify appropriate teaching methods and resources.
  • Develop and deliver tailored learning plans that support the progress of learners with special educational needs.
  • Provide one-to-one or small group tuition to enhance academic and social skills.
  • Monitor and record learner progress, adjusting teaching approaches as necessary to meet learning objectives.
  • Collaborate with educational professionals, families and carers to ensure a consistent approach to support.
  • Promote positive behaviour and encourage learners to develop confidence and self-esteem.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sessions and learner achievements.
  • Adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the welfare of learners.
  • Keep abreast of developments in special educational needs and inclusive teaching practises.

Required Qualifications

  • A recognised qualification in Special Educational Needs, Education, or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant teaching or tutoring certification.

Education

  • A minimum of Level 3 qualification in Education, Special Educational Needs, or an equivalent field.
  • Higher education qualifications in Education or SEN are advantageous.

Experience

  • Proven experience working with learners who have special educational needs.
  • Experience in delivering individualised or small group educational support.
  • Familiarity with educational assessments and adapting learning materials accordingly.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of special educational needs and inclusive education principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with learners and stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop and implement tailored learning plans.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Patience, empathy and a positive attitude towards supporting learners with diverse needs.
  • Competence in using educational technology and resources to enhance learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualification in behaviour management or counselling.
  • Experience working within a school or educational setting.
  • Training in safeguarding and child protection.

Working Conditions

This role is primarily based within an educational setting in Oxfordshire, with occasional requirements to travel within the region. The position involves working part-time hours, which may include mornings or afternoons to accommodate learners’ timetables. The role requires adherence to safeguarding policies and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. The tutor works closely with learners who may present a range of learning, behavioural and social needs, necessitating patience and adaptability.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
