Job Description
We seek a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor to provide tailored support to pupils with additional learning requirements. The role involves delivering one-to-one or small group tuition, adapting teaching methods to meet individual needs, and working closely with educational professionals to promote positive learning outcomes. The successful candidate supports pupils’ academic progress and personal development within a structured and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver personalised tuition sessions that address the specific needs of pupils with special educational needs.
- Assess pupils’ current abilities and identify areas for development through observation and formal assessments.
- Develop and implement individualised learning plans in line with pupils’ targets and educational goals.
- Utilise a range of teaching strategies and resources to engage pupils and accommodate different learning styles.
- Monitor and record pupils’ progress, providing regular feedback to parents or guardians and relevant educational staff.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of sessions and pupil development.
- Collaborate with schools, therapists, and other professionals to ensure a consistent approach to support.
- Promote positive behaviour and social skills through structured activities and encouragement.
- Stay informed about current best practises and developments in special educational needs and tutoring techniques.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent qualification in education or special educational needs.
- Relevant qualifications or training in Special Educational Needs support or SEN teaching.
Education
- A degree or diploma in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or a related discipline is preferred.
Experience
- Proven experience working as a tutor or educator supporting pupils with special educational needs.
- Experience in planning and delivering individualised learning sessions.
- Familiarity with a range of SEN conditions and appropriate teaching strategies.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of the principles and practises related to special educational needs.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage pupils and liaise with professionals and families.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to suit individual needs and learning styles.
- Effective organisational skills with an ability to manage time and resources efficiently.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude towards supporting pupils’ learning and development.
- Competence in using educational technology and resources to enhance learning.
- Knowledge of safeguarding requirements and commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional training or certification in autism spectrum disorders, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, or related areas.
- Experience working within a school setting or with external educational agencies.
- First aid qualification.
Working Conditions
- The role is primarily based in educational settings within Oxfordshire but may include home visits or online tuition as appropriate.
- Part-time hours, with some flexibility required to accommodate pupils’ schedules.
- Temporary contract with potential for extension based on funding and pupil needs.
- Work involves direct interaction with children and young people requiring physical and emotional support.
- The post requires adherence to safeguarding policies and undergoing relevant background checks prior to commencement.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
