Special Educational Needs Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor provides tailored educational support to learners with a range of additional needs. The role involves planning, delivering and monitoring personalised learning programmes that enable learners to make meaningful progress. The tutor works closely with learners to address barriers to learning and promotes independence and confidence. The position requires adapting teaching methods and materials to suit individual needs and liaising with wider educational professionals as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess learners’ individual needs and develop bespoke learning plans to support their progress.
- Deliver one-to-one or small group tutoring sessions in accordance with learners’ requirements and agreed objectives.
- Utilise a variety of teaching strategies and resources to engage learners and accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Monitor and evaluate learner progress regularly, providing detailed feedback and adjusting plans accordingly.
- Maintain accurate records of sessions, learner achievements and any concerns or observations.
- Communicate effectively with parents, carers and relevant educational professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to learner support.
- Promote a positive and safe learning environment that fosters respect and confidence.
- Stay informed of current best practises and legislation relating to special educational needs and disabilities.
- Support learners in developing social and emotional skills alongside academic progress where appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification in Education, Teaching, or a related subject.
- Recognised qualification or training specific to Special Educational Needs (for example, a Certificate in Special Educational Needs Coordination or equivalent).
Education
- Minimum of a Level 3 qualification relevant to education or teaching.
- Further professional development in Special Educational Needs is essential.
Experience
- Proven experience working with children or young people who have Special Educational Needs.
- Experience in delivering individualised teaching or tutoring sessions.
- Familiarity with a range of SEN conditions and appropriate strategies to support learning.
- Experience of liaising with parents, carers and educational professionals.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building rapport with learners and their families.
- Ability to plan, organise and adapt teaching materials to meet diverse needs.
- Patience, empathy and resilience when working with learners who may face significant challenges.
- Good record-keeping and administrative abilities.
- Proficient in using educational resources and technology to enhance learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Education, Special Educational Needs, Psychology, or a related discipline.
- Teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with SEN specialism.
- Experience working within a school or specialised SEN setting.
- Training in behaviour management or therapeutic approaches.
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours with flexibility to accommodate learner timetables.
- Work takes place within educational settings such as schools, resource centres or learner homes.
- Occasional travel within Oxfordshire and surrounding areas may be required.
- Engagement in ongoing professional development and supervision.
- Work involves direct interaction with vulnerable learners and requires adherence to safeguarding policies.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
