Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The SEN Tutor provides specialised educational support to students with special educational needs, facilitating their learning and development within academic or alternative settings. The role focuses on delivering tailored support that meets individual needs, promoting inclusion and progression in line with established educational frameworks. The SEN Tutor works closely with educational professionals and follows individual learning plans to ensure students achieve their full potential.
Job Duties
- Deliver targeted tuition and support to students with a range of special educational needs and disabilities.
- Develop and implement individualised learning plans in accordance with educational assessments and recommendations.
- Monitor and assess student progress, adapting teaching methods and materials as necessary to meet specific learning requirements.
- Provide a supportive and encouraging learning environment that fosters confidence and independence.
- Collaborate with schools, parents or guardians, and other professionals to ensure consistent and holistic support for students.
- Maintain accurate records of sessions, progress reports and any behavioural observations.
- Stay informed on current educational practises, legislation and guidance related to special educational needs.
- Support students in developing key skills, including literacy, numeracy, social interaction and self-management.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and promote the welfare and safety of all students during sessions.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised qualification in education, special educational needs, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience working with children or young people with special educational needs.
- Understanding of relevant legislation and statutory frameworks relating to special educational needs.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check clearance or willingness to undergo the check.
Education
- Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
- Additional qualifications in SEN support, teaching assistant training, or other relevant education qualifications are advantageous.
Experience
- Previous experience delivering one-to-one or small group support to SEN students within educational or community settings.
- Experience in adapting lesson plans to meet diverse learning needs.
- Familiarity with assessment tools and progress tracking in SEN contexts.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of various special educational needs, including but not limited to autism spectrum conditions, dyslexia, and social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents and professionals.
- Patience, empathy and the ability to motivate and build trust with students.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively in a part-time capacity.
- Competence in using educational resources and technology to enhance learning.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships with educational teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent.
- Training or certification in behaviour management or positive handling techniques.
- Experience working within mainstream school environments as well as specialist settings.
- Knowledge of the Code of Practise for Special Educational Needs.
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours, flexible working arrangements to accommodate student timetables.
- Work takes place predominantly within school or educational settings in Oxfordshire and surrounding areas.
- Role involves direct contact with children and young people, requiring adherence to safeguarding protocols at all times.
- May involve some travel between locations within South East England.
- Temporary contract with potential for extension based on funding and performance.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
