Special Educational Needs Tutor

Salary: £25 - £35 per hour

Job Description

The Special Educational Needs Tutor supports learners with additional needs by providing tailored tuition and learning support. The role involves assessing individual needs, planning and delivering personalised learning programmes, and monitoring progress to ensure learners achieve their full potential. The tutor works closely with educational institutions, parents, and external agencies to provide effective support that enhances educational outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver individual or small group tuition sessions focused on the learner’s specific requirements.
• Assess learners’ needs through observation, diagnostic assessment, and consultation with relevant parties.
• Develop and implement personalised learning plans in line with current educational standards and best practises.
• Monitor and record learner progress, adapting teaching strategies to meet evolving needs.
• Provide clear and constructive feedback to learners and their families or carers.
• Collaborate with teachers, educational psychologists, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive support.
• Maintain accurate records of sessions, progress reports, and communication logs.
• Stay informed of developments in special educational needs and inclusive teaching methods.
• Promote a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages learner confidence and independence.

Required Qualifications

• Relevant teaching qualification or equivalent professional certification in education or special educational needs.
• Qualification in Special Educational Needs Coordination (SENCo) or similar is desirable.
• Enhanced DBS clearance or willingness to undergo the process prior to commencing work.

Education

• A degree or equivalent qualification in education, special educational needs, psychology, or a related field is preferred.
• Continued professional development in SEN provision and inclusive education methodologies.

Experience

• Proven experience of working with learners who have special educational needs in one-to-one or small group settings.
• Experience in developing and delivering tailored learning programmes based on individual needs.
• Familiarity with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including but not limited to dyslexia, autism spectrum conditions, and speech and language challenges.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of the SEN Code of Practise and current legislation relating to special educational needs and disabilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building rapport with learners, families, and professionals.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to suit differing learning styles and needs.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and maintain detailed records.
• Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting learner development and wellbeing.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other educational software is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching qualification recognised within the United Kingdom.
• Additional qualifications in specific learning difficulties or disabilities.
• First aid training or willingness to undertake relevant safeguarding training.

Working Conditions

• This role is temporary and part-time, with flexible hours to meet learner needs.
• Work is primarily based in educational settings within Oxfordshire, with occasional home visits or remote support as required.
• Some travel within the South East England region may be necessary.
• The role requires adherence to safeguarding policies and confidentiality at all times.
• Occasional requirement to work outside of standard school hours to accommodate learner availability.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
