Job Description

As a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor, you provide tailored educational support to learners with additional needs, helping them to access the curriculum and develop essential skills. You work closely with pupils to identify their learning requirements and create personalised tutoring plans that support their academic progress and personal development. You deliver one-to-one and small group sessions, utilising appropriate teaching methods and resources to engage and motivate learners. You monitor and assess progress regularly, adapting your approach to meet evolving needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and deliver individual or small group tuition to learners with special educational needs and disabilities, ensuring sessions are engaging and effective.
• Assess learners’ abilities and requirements through observation, assessment tools and liaising with relevant professionals and parents or carers.
• Create and implement personalised learning plans that address specific educational challenges and promote progression.
• Use a variety of teaching resources and strategies suitable for different learning styles and needs.
• Monitor and record learners’ progress, providing regular feedback to learners, parents or carers and relevant educational staff.
• Support learners in developing key skills including literacy, numeracy, communication, and social interaction.
• Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with data protection regulations and organisational policies.
• Work collaboratively with schools, parents, carers and other professionals to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to learning support.
• Contribute to reviews and planning meetings as required to discuss learner progress and future needs.
• Keep up to date with developments in SEN education, relevant legislation and best practise methodologies.

Required Qualifications

• Relevant teaching qualification or recognised qualification in special educational needs, such as a Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent.
• Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance or equivalent safeguarding certification.

Education

• Minimum of GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications.
• Further education or training in education, special educational needs or related disciplines is preferred.

Experience

• Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs, preferably in a tutoring, teaching assistant or specialist support role.
• Experience in planning and delivering individualised learning support.
• Familiarity with a range of SEN conditions and associated learning challenges.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of the principles of special educational needs and inclusive education.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to suit a variety of learning needs and abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with learners and liaise effectively with parents, carers and professionals.
• Patience, empathy and a positive attitude towards supporting learners with additional needs.
• Organisational skills to manage time effectively and maintain accurate records.
• Competence in using educational resources and technology to enhance learning.

Preferred Qualifications

• Qualification in autism spectrum conditions, dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties.
• First aid qualification relevant to working with children and young people.
• Experience in working within a school or educational setting supporting SEN learners.

Working Conditions

• The role is part-time and temporary, with hours and days adaptable depending on the needs of the learners and organisation.
• Work takes place primarily within educational settings such as schools or learning centres in Oxfordshire.
• Occasional travel within the local area may be required.
• Some flexibility in working hours to accommodate learners’ timetables and requirements is necessary.
• The role involves working closely with children and young people with diverse and complex needs, requiring patience, resilience and a calm demeanour.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
