Job Description
The role of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor involves delivering specialised tuition to pupils with additional learning needs. The tutor supports learners to overcome barriers to education, facilitating their access to the curriculum and enhancing their academic and personal development. This position requires the ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet individual needs, promoting inclusion and fostering confidence and independence in learners.
Job Duties
- Plan, prepare and deliver tailored lessons to pupils with special educational needs, ensuring engagement and progress.
- Assess individual learning requirements and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.
- Support pupils in developing literacy, numeracy, communication, social and emotional skills.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and communicate regularly with parents or guardians as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with schools, educational psychologists and other professionals to implement personalised learning plans.
- Provide a safe and supportive learning environment that promotes positive behaviour and wellbeing.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching approaches and adapt practises to improve outcomes.
- Stay informed of current best practises, legislation and developments in the field of special educational needs.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent experience in education.
- Relevant qualifications or training in special educational needs or inclusive education.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance.
Education
- A minimum of Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject is preferred.
- Further professional development related to SEN teaching is advantageous.
Experience
- Proven experience of working with children or young people with special educational needs.
- Experience in delivering one-to-one or small group tuition in an educational setting.
- Familiarity with developing and implementing personalised learning plans.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of the SEN Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
- Ability to differentiate teaching approaches to meet diverse learning needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy and a positive approach to supporting learners.
- Organisational skills for planning, record-keeping and time management.
- Competence in using educational technology and resources to enhance learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Level 4 or above qualification specialising in special educational needs.
- Experience working within mainstream or special schools.
- Knowledge of specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, autism spectrum conditions or speech and language disorders.
Working Conditions
- The role is temporary and part-time, offering flexibility in working hours to accommodate pupil needs.
- Work primarily takes place in educational settings within Greater London.
- Occasional travel between schools or venues may be required.
- The position may involve working with vulnerable children and young people, requiring adherence to safeguarding policies.
- The tutor is expected to maintain professional conduct at all times and engage in continuous professional development.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
