Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor provides tailored educational support and personalised learning programmes to pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities. The role involves working closely with learners to develop essential skills, improve academic performance, and foster independent learning in line with their individual education plans. The tutor collaborates with educational professionals and families to ensure a holistic approach to learning and development within a supportive environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess individual learning needs and create bespoke tutoring plans aligned with pupils’ targets and abilities.
- Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition sessions in a variety of subject areas, adapting teaching methods to suit different learning styles and challenges.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, providing regular feedback to pupils, parents, and relevant educational staff.
- Use a range of educational resources and assistive technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
- Support pupils in developing communication, literacy, numeracy, social, and life skills.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment that encourages confidence and engagement.
- Collaborate with schools, therapists, and other professionals to align tutoring with broader educational and developmental goals.
- Attend planning meetings and contribute to the review and update of pupils’ individual education plans.
- Uphold safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the welfare of all learners.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised teaching qualification or relevant professional qualification in education or special educational needs.
- Certification in special educational needs provision, such as the National Award for SEN Coordination or equivalent, is desirable.
Education
- A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in Education, Teaching Assistance, or a related discipline.
- Further training or qualifications specifically related to SEN are preferred.
Experience
- Proven experience working as a tutor, teaching assistant, or similar role within an SEN setting.
- Experience supporting pupils with a variety of special educational needs including, but not limited to, autism spectrum conditions, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, and behavioural challenges.
- Experience of planning and delivering personalised learning sessions is essential.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of SEN frameworks, legislation, and best practise guidance in England.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with pupils and families.
- Ability to assess pupil needs and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.
- Proficient in the use of educational resources and digital learning tools.
- Organised and able to manage time effectively within a part-time, temporary role.
- Empathy, patience, and resilience in supporting learners with diverse needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in educational settings.
- Additional qualifications or training in specific SEN areas such as speech and language therapy support, occupational therapy strategies, or behavioural management.
- First aid certification or willingness to obtain it.
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours, flexible working arrangements to suit the needs of pupils and the educational setting.
- Work takes place primarily within educational environments in Greater London.
- Occasional travel between different locations may be required.
- Engagement in continuous professional development and supervision sessions.
- Work involves close contact with children and young people, requiring adherence to safeguarding and health and safety policies.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
