SEN Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The SEN Tutor provides targeted support to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The role involves delivering personalised teaching sessions that address individual learning requirements, enabling pupils to achieve their academic and developmental potential. The tutor collaborates with educational professionals to implement tailored learning plans and monitors progress regularly to adapt teaching methods accordingly.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition to pupils with special educational needs, following individual learning plans.
- Assess pupils’ abilities and needs to develop appropriate teaching strategies and materials.
- Support pupils in overcoming learning barriers related to cognitive, behavioural, emotional, or physical difficulties.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, providing clear feedback to parents, carers, and educational professionals.
- Adapt teaching methods and resources to suit diverse learning styles and needs.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment at all times.
- Communicate effectively with parents, carers, and relevant professionals regarding pupil development and support strategies.
- Uphold safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of children and young people.
- Attend relevant meetings, training sessions and contribute to the continuous improvement of SEN provision.
Required Qualifications
- Recognised teaching qualification or equivalent experience in education.
- Specialist qualification or training in special educational needs is essential.
Education
- A minimum of Level 3 qualification in Education, Child Development, or a related subject.
- Additional qualifications in SEN or related areas are highly desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience working with children and young people with special educational needs.
- Experience in delivering tailored teaching or tutoring sessions that address individual learning requirements.
- Familiarity with various SEN conditions and appropriate teaching approaches.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of special educational needs and inclusive teaching practises.
- Ability to assess pupil needs and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage pupils, families and professionals.
- Patience, empathy and a positive, encouraging approach to learning support.
- Competent in planning, delivering and evaluating personalised learning sessions.
- Good organisational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and commitment to pupil welfare.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher-level qualifications in Special Educational Needs, such as the National Award for SEN Coordination or equivalent.
- Experience working within mainstream or special schools.
- Training in behaviour management or therapeutic approaches relevant to SEN.
Working Conditions
- This is a temporary, part-time position, with flexible working hours to accommodate pupil needs.
- Work takes place primarily within educational settings or pupils’ homes, adhering to health and safety standards.
- Occasional travel within Greater London may be required.
- The role involves working closely with children and young people, necessitating a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
