We are currently seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant to start work on a full time basis at an Alternative Provision in Portsmouth. 

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting the class teacher and possibly support other TA’s in the room throughout the school day.
  • Helping pupils with their work, assistance in group work activities, providing an alternative environment for the pupils to work to promote the pupils progress and help them reach their full potential.
  • Supporting the teaching and learning of pupils across the school, working with struggling pupils or those who have become stifled by the curriculum.
  • Helping students meet their potential through smaller booster groups and 1:1 sessions.
  • Supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
  • Working closely with the SENCO to monitor and advance developments in both academic and social areas.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will have experience of working with children of special educational needs and more specifically, we are specifically looking for support staff with a particular specialism such as ASD, Speech and Language, SLD and other Learning Disabilities. Due to the nature of the students a patient, caring and compassionate approach is needed. You need to be flexible, energetic, and ideally have experience of working with children with profound and complex disabilities and/or autism.  However, training will be provided for the right candidate. This role could be suitable for a candidate with an interest in pursuing a career in teaching or learning support. What you need to know about the school:

The school provides education for Portsmouth pupils who are unable to attend mainstream school for either Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Needs or medical reasons. There are 95 places for learners with Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs), 105 Alternative Provision (AP) places and 38 places funded from the ‘medical block’. The school makes provision for learners who require a short period of Alternative Provision away from mainstream school and for learners with long term and complex SEMH Needs. We operate under an SLA with Portsmouth City Council and are in the process of converting to academy status.
