Job description

Autism and SEMH Learning Support

Join our dedicated team at Teaching Personnel, a leading provider of educational support services, Supporting with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We are currently seeking a compassionate and experienced Autism Behaviour Support Mentor to work within the Specialist Unit in a mainstream Primary School. Primary School in Nelson (BB9) 

Start date: June 2024 (with a view to transition onto a permanent contact) 

Full- time Monday - Friday (8:30 - 15:30) 

Pay rate: £12.90 - £13.55 per hour (AWR will be addressed after 12 working weeks) 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide individualised support and guidance to students with Autism/ SEN and SEMH, assisting them in regulating emotions, developing coping strategies, and navigating social interactions.
  • Implement behaviour management techniques tailored to the specific needs of students with ASD, including sensory regulation strategies and visual supports.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff, SENCOs, and external professionals to develop and implement personalized behaviour plans and support strategies for students with SEMH and ASD needs.
  • Manage instances of anti-social behaviour within Alternative Provision settings, using proactive strategies to prevent escalation and promote positive behaviour.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, behaviour incidents, and interventions, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive environment within the classroom and across the provision, promoting understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity.
  • Provide guidance and support to teaching staff on best practices for supporting students with ASD and SEMH needs within the classroom environment.
  • Act as a positive role model for students, demonstrating empathy, patience, and understanding in all interactions.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH and ASD needs, preferably within an educational or alternative provision setting desirable.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques, including de-escalation strategies and positive reinforcement approaches.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and external professionals.
  • Resilience and patience when working with challenging behaviour and complex emotional needs.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, psychology, counselling, or a related field are desirable but not essential.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, adhering to organisational policies and procedures at all times.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain) is required for this role.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
