SEMH Support Assistant role – Blackpool Primary School

SEMH Support Assistant; experience working with children suffering SEMH issues.

Level 2 or equivalent qualification required to undertake this role

Join a staff team who are working together to raise standards and improve on their previous whole school Ofsted inspection.

A Primary School in Blackpool have approached Teaching Personnel to appoint a specialist member of support staff to work on a 1:1 basis with a child in Year 3. The child has had SEMH issues in the past but has struggled to adapt to the current situation and so support will be required for at least this academic year to ensure they don’t fall further behind.

The child has an education plan for social, emotional, and mental health needs and so the school are keen to employ a member of staff to work from 8:30 to 15:00.  The SENCO in school has noted that the child has worked through the infant classes with a support assistant who is now leaving school in the Summer. This pupil requires a nurturing approach as lockdown has affected their mental health negatively.

The school is currently improving and working hard to gain a more positive Ofsted grading. This is predominately a White British community which is well known for its low socio-economic families, transient communities and rented social housing. Generally, the school employ members of staff who have worked previously in schools with ‘challenging’ children. The Head teacher has worked well this year to implement a consistent behaviour policy which is now taking affect. The children are responding well to this and in recent months, members of staff who have worked through Teaching Personnel have commented on how well the strategies are working.

The role willasap and will run through till summer with a view to supporting the pupil into the 2021/22 academic year. The SENCO will provide support for the success member of staff and give additional training and professional development needed to provide good support for the child. In the meantime, the SENCO has asked for a range of CVs, specifying previous experience. She is wanting to meet the shortlisted candidates for a short interview.

Last year, the school had an influx of children requiring SEN support staff and so a number of teaching assistants were taken on through Teaching Personnel. Three of the staff members secured a permanent contract with the school and have commented on how well they have settled in.

There is no fee to join Teaching Personnel, all we ask is that you have the correct experiences, qualifications and an up-to-date DBS on the update service online or a willingness to obtain one.
