Job description

About the Role

Teaching Personnel is seeking dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistants to join a highly challenging Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) setting. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people who have experienced significant barriers to education.

The successful candidates will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide tailored assistance to pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, often presenting with challenging behaviour. You will play a vital role in helping students re-engage with learning and develop positive coping strategies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to access learning and manage behaviour.
  • Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies.
  • Assist in creating a safe, structured, and nurturing environment.
  • Promote positive relationships and encourage emotional regulation.
  • Liaise with teachers, therapists, and external agencies to ensure holistic support.
  • Participate in physical activities and sports sessions where appropriate.

Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage challenging situations effectively.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience in:
    • Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) or alternative provisions.
    • Residential care or youth mental health settings.
    • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Background in sport, coaching, or mentoring (male candidates with these skills are particularly welcomed).
  • Team Teach or similar behaviour management training (advantageous).
