SEMH Teaching Assistant – Primary School

A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Burnley is recruiting a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is a full-time opportunity to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs in a positive and nurturing school environment.
Role Overview
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils across the primary age range, providing 1:1 and small group support to help them access learning, regulate behaviour, and develop key social and emotional skills.
The school promotes a positive, relationship-based approach to behaviour and is committed to working closely with families to support each child’s development.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
- Support behaviour management using positive and proactive strategies
- Help pupils develop emotional regulation, resilience, and social skills
- Work alongside class teachers and the SENCO to deliver targeted support
- Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils
- Support communication with parents/carers and contribute to a holistic approach
- Assist in creating a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people (essential)
- Experience supporting SEMH or challenging behaviour (desirable)
- Relevant qualification (Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Youth Work or similar) (essential)
- Strong behaviour management skills
- Calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
