Job description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Year 1 Teaching Assistant with strong phonics experience to join our friendly and supportive primary school. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a committed teaching team, supporting pupils as they develop the essential literacy skills needed for future success.

The successful candidate will have experience delivering phonics interventions and supporting children in Key Stage 1, helping pupils to build confidence in reading, writing, and communication.

Year 1 Teaching Assistant (Phonics Specialist)

Location: Burnley
Salary: £14.25 - £15 per hour
Contract Type: Long-term
Hours: 8.30am – 3.30pm
Start Date: 1st September 2026

Year 2 Teaching Assistant Required

The Role

As a Year 1 Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support teaching and learning within a Year 1 classroom.
  • Deliver phonics sessions and targeted interventions to individuals and small groups.
  • Assist pupils in preparing for and achieving success in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check where required.
  • Support the development of reading, writing, and language skills.
  • Work closely with the class teacher to identify and address learning gaps.
  • Encourage pupil engagement, confidence, and independence.
  • Help create a positive, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitor and report on pupil progress during intervention sessions.

The Successful Candidate Will Have:

  • Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school setting.
  • Strong knowledge of phonics programmes such as Little Wandle, Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds, or similar.
  • Experience supporting children in Key Stage 1.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A patient, caring, and encouraging approach.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with children, staff, and parents.
  • A commitment to helping every child achieve their full potential.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
