Pastoral Support Worker – SEMH School (Bolton)

Full-Time | Long-Term | Via Teaching Personnel

Are you passionate about supporting young people who face barriers to learning? Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Pastoral Support Worker to join a specialist Secondary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in the Bolton area. Pupils may present with a range of complex needs, including ADHD, anxiety, trauma-related behaviours, attachment difficulties, oppositional or defiant behaviours, low self-esteem, emotional regulation difficulties, and challenging social circumstances. This is a rewarding opportunity to help students develop resilience, confidence and positive routines.


Key Responsibilities

As a Pastoral Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in supporting pupils’ wellbeing, behaviour, and engagement. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing 1:1 or small-group pastoral support to pupils with SEMH needs
  • Supporting pupils with behaviour regulation, emotional literacy and positive coping strategies
  • De-escalating challenging situations using trauma-informed approaches
  • Building strong, trusting relationships to encourage attendance and participation
  • Supporting pupils with personal development, social skills and confidence
  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral teams, SENCOs and external agencies
  • Monitoring pupil wellbeing and contributing to behaviour plans or support strategies
  • Supporting transitions, reintegration and daily routines for vulnerable pupils
  • Helping maintain a safe, structured and nurturing school environment

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, SEMH needs, or in youth work/social care/community settings
  • A calm, resilient and patient approach to behaviour management
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work full-time, Monday–Friday
  • A genuine passion for helping young people thrive
  • Willingness to complete (or already possess) an Enhanced DBS
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Experience in SEMH, PRUs or alternative provisions is highly desirable but not essential.
