Job description

Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant Secondary

Location: Birmingham
Sector: Secondary Education

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support secondary-aged students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role involves working 1:1 and in small groups with students who may display challenging behaviour, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, or difficulties engaging with learning.You will play a vital role in helping students develop emotional regulation, positive behaviour, and confidence, while supporting their access to the secondary curriculum. Working closely with the SENCO, pastoral team, behaviour leads, and teaching staff, you will provide consistent, tailored support aligned with EHCP targets and behaviour support plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group SEMH support throughout the school day.

  • Support students to manage emotions, behaviour, and engagement in lessons.

  • Build positive, trusting relationships that promote emotional safety and self-esteem.

  • Implement behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.

  • Support access to learning through structured and personalised approaches.

  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.

About You

  • Calm, patient, and emotionally resilient.

  • Passionate about supporting young people with SEMH needs.

  • Confident managing behaviour and challenging situations.

  • Adaptable, proactive, and a strong communicator.

  • Experience with SEMH, behaviour needs, ADHD, ASD, or trauma-informed practice.
