SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant

Role: Secondary PRU
Location: Salford Area

Contract: Full-Time
Start date: Immediate Start
Salary: Competitive and based on experience

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a pupil in a Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Salford area. This is a full-time position with an immediate start, ideal for someone passionate about making a real difference to young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.

Students you will support may present with SEMH needs such as emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, trauma-related behaviours, low self-esteem, attachment challenges, and challenging or disengaged behaviour.


What is a PRU?

A Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) is a specialist educational setting designed to support children and young people who are unable to attend mainstream school due to behavioural, emotional, or mental health needs. PRUs provide smaller class sizes, higher levels of support, and a personalised approach, helping students re-engage with education and achieve positive outcomes.


✅ Key Responsibilities

As a SEMH 1-2-1 Teaching Assistant you will:

  • Provide one-to-one support to a pupil with SEMH needs
  • Build a strong, trusting relationship to promote engagement and emotional wellbeing
  • Support learning activities in line with individual behaviour and support plans
  • Assist with de-escalation strategies and emotional regulation
  • Encourage positive behaviour, resilience and independence
  • Work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs and pastoral teams
  • Maintain clear records of progress, behaviour and incidents
  • Support with personal care if required, ensuring dignity and respect

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with SEMH needs (e.g. trauma, anxiety, behaviour challenges)
  • Previous experience in a school, PRU or alternative provision
  • A calm, resilient and empathetic approach
  • Strong behaviour management and communication skills
  • An Enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service (or willingness to apply through Teaching Personnel)
  • Team Teach training (desirable but not essential)
