Job description

SEMH Pupil Support Assistant
Rochdale
Full-time | Term-time only
Permanent / Long-term opportunity

Make a real difference where it matters most.

We are a dedicated SEMH secondary school in Rochdale, committed to transforming the lives of young people who need support beyond the traditional classroom. Our students face social, emotional, and mental health challenges — and with the right support, they can thrive.

We are looking for a compassionate, resilient, and motivated SEMH Pupil Support Assistant to join our team.

About the Role

As a Pupil Support Assistant, you will work closely with students aged 11–16, providing tailored support to help them engage in learning, regulate their emotions, and build positive relationships.

This is a rewarding but challenging role where no two days are the same. You will play a key role in helping students feel safe, understood, and capable of success.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Supporting students with SEMH needs both in and out of the classroom
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour in a calm, positive manner
  • Encouraging emotional regulation and resilience
  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals
  • Helping to create a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need to come from a school background — we welcome applicants with transferable experience and a genuine passion for supporting young people.

Relevant experience could include:

  • Youth work or mentoring
  • Care or support work
  • Sports coaching
  • Mental health or wellbeing roles
  • Residential care or outreach work
  • Any role involving behaviour support or working with vulnerable individuals

You’ll Be a Great Fit If You:

  • Are calm, patient, and resilient under pressure
  • Have strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Are empathetic but able to maintain clear boundaries
  • Are proactive, positive, and solution-focused
  • Have a genuine desire to make a difference in young people’s lives

What We Offer

  • A supportive and experienced team environment
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Opportunities to progress within SEMH and pastoral support
  • A role where you will see real, meaningful impact every day
