Phonics Support Teaching Assistant

Location: Birkenhead (CH41)

Start Date: March 2026

Rate of Pay: From £13.75 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Phonics Support Teaching Assistant to work within a warm and welcoming primary school, providing targeted support to pupils who need additional guidance in early reading and phonics development. This role is perfect for someone passionate about helping children build confidence, fluency, and a love for reading.

You will work closely with the class teacher and literacy lead to deliver structured phonics interventions, using recognised programmes such as Little Wandle, Read Write Inc., or Letters and Sounds (experience in any programme is welcomed but not essential).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering targeted phonics interventions to small groups or individual pupils.
  • Helping pupils build confidence and fluency through structured, engaging learning activities.
  • Working with class teachers and the literacy lead to monitor progress and adapt support where needed.
  • Using assessment tools to track reading development and identify gaps.
  • Encouraging a positive attitude towards reading and celebrating pupil successes.
  • Supporting wider classroom learning when required and promoting an inclusive, calm learning environment.
  • Building supportive relationships with pupils to help them thrive emotionally and academically.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Experience supporting children in an educational setting (phonics experience is highly desirable).
  • Knowledge of early reading strategies and synthetic phonics approaches.
  • A patient, encouraging, and child‑centred approach.
  • A strong understanding of how to motivate young learners.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
