Pastoral Teaching Assistant 

Location: Blackburn
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
Pay: £13.50 – £15.50 per hour
Contract: Full-time, long-term

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Pastoral Teaching Assistant to join a secondary SEMH provision in Blackburn on a full-time, long-term basis.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about pastoral care and behaviour support, working closely with students who present with social, emotional and mental health needs, including challenging behaviour.

The Role

  • Provide 1:1 and small group pastoral support to secondary-aged students

  • Support students with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement

  • Build strong, consistent and trusting relationships

  • De-escalate challenging situations using a calm and reflective approach

  • Work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs and pastoral teams

  • Support students both inside and outside of the classroom

Working in an SEMH Provision

Working within an SEMH setting is demanding but highly rewarding. Students may display challenging behaviour as a form of communication and require adults who are patient, understanding and consistent. As a Pastoral Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in helping students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience working with SEMH, SEN or challenging behaviour (desirable)

  • Calm, empathetic and emotionally resilient

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Able to manage behaviour positively and professionally

  • Committed to supporting young people to achieve positive outcomes

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
