Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant - MLD

  • Teaching Assistant position supporting students with moderate learning difficulties
  • Provide 1:1 support or 2:1 support where necessary
  • Strong behaviour management skills and patience are essential

I am currently looking for a Teaching Assistant to support students in a Special Educational Needs school in Harrogate. The school specialises in supporting students with Moderate Learning Difficulties meaning children often have difficulties following the national curriculum resulting in attainments significantly lower than expected levels. Children often have difficulty understanding basic concepts, have difficulty with reading, writing, numeracy and have poor memory meaning they struggle to retain knowledge learned. You will find students work at levels from P-Scales through to national curriculum so an understanding of both is ideal.

Working 1:1 with students you will be required to secure a routine for working that children find simple while setting high expectations so students have aspirations. Encouragement, praise and positive reward will be key aspects of building children's knowledge at all levels. You will need to be patient and have strong behaviour management skills as children can often appear immature and distracted.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with children and young people in any setting
  • Be patient, understanding and empathetic to all students
  • Be willing to learn and think on their feet to best meet the ever changing needs of students
  • Feel confident in managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour
  • Be confident in providing personal care to students such as assisting with feeding and toileting
  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the update service or be willing to apply for one
