Graduate Teaching Assistant – SEMH Secondary School

Location: Rochdale

Are you a recent graduate in Psychology, Sociology, or Criminology looking to kick-start your career in education? This is an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive SEMH secondary school setting. You’ll be working with students who have a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including Anxiety, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attachment Difficulties and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

This role is perfect for graduates who want to develop practical skills, gain insight into behaviour management, and make a real difference in young people’s lives. Many of our graduates go on to careers in teaching, educational psychology, or social work – this is the ideal first step!


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Support students in small groups or on a one-to-one basis.
  • Help implement strategies to manage behaviour and promote emotional well-being.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons tailored to individual needs.
  • Build positive relationships and act as a role model for pupils.
  • Encourage progress and celebrate achievements every day.

What We’re Looking For

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (essential).
  • Two professional references covering the last 24 months.
  • Experience is not essential – but you must be passionate about supporting children.
  • Patient, resilient, and empathetic approach to challenges.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
