ESOL Tutor
Job description
In-Home ESOL Tutor Wanted – SEN Experience Essential
We are looking for a committed, empathetic, and experienced ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutor to provide in-person, one-to-one tuition to a young learner in their home. The student is of school age and has recently relocated to the UK. English is not their first language, and they require support to develop core language skills—particularly in speaking, reading, listening, and writing—in order to build confidence both academically and socially. In addition to language support, the student has Special Educational Needs (SEN), including difficulties with attention, processing, and verbal communication. They benefit most from a tutor who is calm, patient, consistent, and able to break down tasks into manageable steps using clear language and visual resources.
The ideal tutor will have experience working with students who have SEN, and should be able to tailor each session to the learner’s individual needs, using a flexible, student-centred approach. You should be skilled in supporting children who may experience anxiety or frustration when learning, and be able to create a safe and engaging environment where progress is encouraged at the learner’s own pace. The ability to build trust and rapport is crucial, as the student responds best to tutors who are warm, encouraging, and sensitive to their emotional as well as academic needs.
You will be responsible for designing and delivering well-structured lessons that focus on improving functional English as well as supporting progress in line with the UK curriculum. This might include helping with schoolwork, developing basic grammar and vocabulary, and supporting language needed for day-to-day communication. You will also be expected to provide informal feedback to the family on how the student is progressing and suggest strategies they can use at home to reinforce learning.
We welcome applications from qualified ESOL tutors, teaching assistants with relevant experience, or teachers with a background in EAL or SEN support. A teaching qualification such as TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, PGCE or QTS is highly desirable but not essential, provided you can demonstrate hands-on experience and success in similar roles. Knowledge of SEN strategies, such as the use of visuals, repetition, scaffolding, and multi-sensory teaching methods, is strongly preferred.
The tutoring sessions will take place in the family’s home. The exact location will be shared with shortlisted candidates, but applicants must be comfortable travelling to and working in a home-based environment. The role offers part-time hours with flexibility, ideally within the school day if possible but other times can be discussed. We are looking for someone who can commit to working with the student on a longer-term basis to ensure consistency and progress.
Applicants must hold a valid enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) or be willing to obtain one before beginning work. References may also be requested.
If you are passionate about inclusive education, enjoy helping learners gain confidence through language, and have the experience and sensitivity to work effectively with SEN students, we would love to hear from you.
To apply, please send your CV. Interviews will be arranged with suitable applicants as soon as possible.
All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer all our registered candidates FREE child protection and prevent duty training. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
