Job Description
This role involves providing high-quality tutoring in English and Mathematics to learners of varying ages and abilities. The tutor delivers personalised support to help learners improve their skills, build confidence, and achieve their academic goals. The position requires the ability to assess individual learning needs, prepare tailored lesson plans, and monitor progress effectively. The role is temporary and part-time, based in Oxfordshire, and requires flexibility to meet learners’ scheduling needs.
Job Duties
- Plan and deliver engaging and effective English and Mathematics lessons tailored to individual learner needs.
- Assess learners’ current abilities and identify areas for improvement through diagnostic assessment and ongoing evaluation.
- Develop customised learning materials and resources to support lesson plans and reinforce key concepts.
- Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to help learners build confidence and motivation.
- Monitor and record learner progress, adapting teaching methods as necessary to ensure continued development.
- Support learners in preparation for examinations or specific qualifications, where applicable.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment at all times.
- Communicate effectively with learners and, where appropriate, their guardians or support networks.
- Uphold all relevant safeguarding and health and safety policies.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in English and/or Mathematics, such as a Level 3 qualification or equivalent.
- Formal teaching or tutoring qualification or certification is highly desirable.
Education
- Minimum of GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Mathematics.
- Higher education qualification in Education, English, Mathematics, or a related subject is advantageous.
Experience
- Proven experience delivering tutoring or teaching sessions in English and Mathematics.
- Experience working with learners of different ages and abilities, including those requiring additional support.
- Familiarity with examination requirements and assessment criteria relevant to the subjects taught.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong subject knowledge in English and Mathematics.
- Ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude towards learner development.
- Competency in using digital tools and educational resources to enhance learning.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and confidentiality requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching qualification such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent.
- Experience with online or remote tutoring platforms.
- Additional qualifications in special educational needs or learning support.
Working Conditions
- The role is part-time and temporary, with flexible working hours to accommodate learners’ availability.
- Work may take place in various settings including learners’ homes, community venues, or online.
- The post requires travel within Oxfordshire and surrounding areas.
- Compliance with health and safety regulations and safeguarding procedures is mandatory.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
