An exciting opportunity has arisen at a dynamic secondary school in Portsmouth for a dedicated and experienced Cover Supervisor to join their committed team on a full-time basis. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about education, highly adaptable, and confident managing classrooms in a secondary school environment.

We are looking for a professional who can step into the classroom and maintain high standards of teaching and learning in the absence of teaching staff. This role is pivotal in ensuring continuity of education and supporting student progress across all year groups and subjects.

 

Cover Supervisors play a critical role in the day-to-day running of the school. While not required to teach new content, they are instrumental in:

  • Maintaining positive behaviour and a focused learning environment

  • Minimising disruption to student learning

  • Providing a consistent and stable presence in the classroom

  • Supporting the wider teaching staff in delivering the school’s curriculum and vision

 

Your presence will help uphold high expectations and contribute significantly to the academic and personal development of the students.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver pre-set work to classes across a range of subjects and year groups (Key Stage 3 and 4)

  • Manage student behaviour in line with school policies, promoting a calm and respectful environment

  • Ensure students remain on task and complete work to the best of their ability

  • Respond to student queries regarding instructions and tasks where possible

  • Liaise with teaching staff and Heads of Department to provide feedback on student progress and behaviour

  • Support with administrative tasks or exam invigilation where needed

  • Actively engage with and uphold the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies

 

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor or similar role in a secondary school setting

  • Strong classroom management skills and the confidence to lead a class independently

  • The ability to build positive relationships with students and staff

  • A calm, resilient, and professional approach under pressure

  • A flexible and proactive attitude to meet the needs of the school

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Degree-level education or equivalent

  • Training in behaviour management or classroom leadership

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
