Behaviour Support in West Norwood

Teaching Personnel are seeking a Teaching Assistant for a Behaviour Support role in a West Norwood Pupil Referral Unit (PRU).

The successful candidate must hold a valid Team Teach certificate, or be able to refresh this training over the Summer (August 2018). You will be working with pupils between 8 and 16 years old with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. The pupils have been excluded from mainstream education and regularly display challenging behaviour. You will be able to build a rapport with young people and establish values based on mutual respect, trust and understanding.

The rate is £70 a day, with weekly pay.

Full time availability, Monday to Friday from 8:30am - 16:00pm, is crucial.

As a Team Teach trained Teaching Assistant you will:

  • Be able to state the basic values, rationale and principles of the Team-Teach Approach
  • Have a knowledge and understanding of relevant legal standards and expectations related to use of force
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the reporting, recording, monitoring and evaluating requirements of incidents involving physical controls and reasonable force
  • Have knowledge and understanding of aggression and conflict, being able to recognise typical signs and causes. Have knowledge and understanding of the importance of using de-escalation strategies where possible
  • Have knowledge and understanding of a whole setting holistic approach to behaviour management, including the importance of self-awareness and self-control whilst managing challenging behaviour
  • Be able to conduct a follow up process with the service users and is aware of the importance of a support and supervision, repair and reflection process for both staff and individuals involved following a serious incident involving positive handling strategies

The PRU is based in West Norwood and is easily accessible by both car and public transport from the local areas. It is part of an Umbrella of PRUs who provide education provisions for pupils who cannot be in mainstream schools at all, as well as pupils who are moving onto mainstream education.

You will be working with a supportive Senior Leadership Team with a reputable approach to behaviour management - gaining an Outstanding inspection from Ofsted in 2016. There are currently 52 pupils on roll, and you will be joining an established and experienced team of 12 Learning Support Assistants and 7 specialist PRU teachers.
