SEMH Teaching Assistant – Westminster

Teaching Personnel is surporting an Alternative Provision, which caters for children with social, emotional, mental health (SEMH) needs and other complex needs such as autism, ADHD and speech and language difficulties.

The school is looking for support staff who are committed, and genuinely passionate about making a difference and supporting some of the most vulnerable children in our community.

About the Successful SEMH Teaching Assistant

  • Has at least 1 year of experience working in a school; experience in a specialist setting is highly desirable.
  • Has a good understanding of SEMH, adverse childhood experiences and trauma.
  • Has experience working with children or adults with SEND such as autism, ADHD and speech, language and communication needs.
  • Is happy to support children with all areas of learning, including supporting with their academic learning in the classroom.
  • Is confident, resilient and able to demonstrate their commitment to the school and development of the students.
  • Is energetic and proactive.
  • Can work as a team with other support staff, teachers and therapists.
  • Has completed de-escalation or positive handling training and is keen to take part in regular CPD provided by the school to improve their practice.
  • Holds a relevant degree in psychology, criminology, education, youth work or similar.
  • Must be able to commit to a full-time role (term-time only) for the whole academic year.
  • Is an aspiring SEMH/SEND teacher, psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health practitioner.

Important Details

  • Days: Monday to Friday (term-time only)
  • Hours: 8.30am – 4pm
  • Contract: Temp to perm contract: Permanent contract available after 12 weeks. 
  • Start: Immediate or January (flexible)
  • Pay: Starting daily rate of £90-£105 per day (D.O.E.) and a pay review and increase after 12-weeks

About the SEMH Teaching Assistant Role

  • Support students with a range of needs, namely Social Emotional Mental Health, in all areas of learning and development.
  • Provide support to the class teacher in the classroom, with academic learning and behaviour management.
  • Consult regularly with the class teacher and prepare materials and tasks according to individual needs of students in the class.
  • Work closely with one student, or small groups of students, to provide interventions.
  • Utilise the school’s facilities effectively by offering students sensory and brain breaks.
  • Help students set and meet manageable goals and celebrate achievements.
  • Support students at playtimes and model positive behaviours to encourage healthy and safe peer relationships.
  • Keep accurate written records for students, attend reviews and liaise with other staff and caregivers when required.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
