Teaching Personnel are working closely with a Specialist SEN School in Thirsk, looking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant, to start as soon as possible with the opportunity to become a permanent member of staff. The school is situated in a remote, rural location, so a full driving licence and access to a car is essential.
The school offers day and residential placements for boys aged 9-19 with a range of complex needs, including Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), Asperger's Syndrome (AS), Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), Tourette's Syndrome (TS) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
All pupils are given the opportunity to be themselves, whilst being encouraged to extend their interests and face new challenges. The structure of the school day, combined with the atmosphere generated by the school community, is designed to reduce the likelihood of difficulties and conflicts. School rules are applied flexibly and with sensitivity. Punishments are rarely used. Where difficulties and conflicts do arise then pupils work with staff to resolve them by finding constructive solutions. If consequences are necessary then these are applied with the understanding of the pupil in mind.
You will be confident and experienced in supporting pupils with Autism and have a sound understanding of crisis intervention for pupils with related Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs.
You will have strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate with families, carers and a multidisciplinary team of teaching staff, social workers, speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. You will be organised, patient and confident, with a sound understanding of meeting the social, emotional and mental health needs of young people with Special Educational Needs.
There are currently a number of opportunities available in school, including full time, part time and evening sessional work; offring flexibility to suit your working preferences
Experience or training in the following is also desirable:
* Autism Awareness/ASC Training
* Team Teach
