Autism Support Assistant

The SENCO, Headteacher and Governing Body of a reputable Primary School in Blackburn are seeking a Teaching Assistant to join their team of support staff to work in a 1:1 supporting role. This is an exciting opportunity for any experienced TA to work in a forward-thinking Primary School. With support from the SENCO and Head teacher in school, you will be expected to work on a full-time basis, five days a week, in order to build a good solid working relationship with the child. The school has plenty to offer; with the initial support from the Senior Leadership Team; additional training through staff meetings and CPD; support and training through the Local Authority and other services. The working hours are 8:45-15:15. 

 

What type of candidate are the school looking for?

The school have specified that the successful candidate will be one who has the following qualifications, attributes and experiences;

Level 2 or above Teaching and Learning in Schools – OR an equivalent qualification or degree.

Expertise on the Autism Spectrum and Behaviour.

Prior experience supporting children with specific learning needs on a 1:1 basis.

A practitioner who has the drive and determination to make a difference every day.

A practitioner who is committed to the longevity of the role.

 

What will you be expected to do on a daily basis?

The role will vary on a day to day basis, however with the child’s needs being the main focus, it is important for the new starter to be able to get to grips with the routine of the child. Given the severity of the learning needs, the successful applicant will need to manage behaviour and de-escalate potential distractions in the class. You will therefore need to have a wealth of strategies and techniques that you can use effectively in the classroom that will work in line with the child’s Education Plan.
