1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary)

(Blackburn & Darwen)

Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant – 1:1 Support
Location: Blackburn & Darwen
Contract: Full‑time, long‑term
Pay: £90–£110 per day (depending on experience & training)


About the Role

Teaching Personnel are looking to appoint an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 behavioural and emotional support for a primary pupil with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

You’ll be working within a mainstream primary school in Blackburn or Darwen, supporting the child both in class and during structured pastoral sessions.
This role is ideal for experienced TAs with a background in SEMH, behaviour mentoring or pastoral support.

Requirements (Experienced SEMH Practitioners Only)

Applicants must have:

✔ Experience supporting pupils with SEMH / behavioural needs
✔ Background in a primary school, PRU, alternative provision or SEMH setting
✔ Strong de‑escalation and emotional regulation skills
✔ Ability to build trust and form positive relationships
✔ Knowledge of trauma‑informed practice and attachment needs
✔ Valid enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply)

❌ This role is not open to candidates without relevant behavioural experience.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support to a pupil with SEMH needs
  • Deliver emotional regulation strategies and personalised support
  • Assist the pupil in accessing learning in a calm, structured manner
  • Use trauma‑informed, positive behaviour approaches
  • Work closely with the SENCO, pastoral lead and class teacher
  • Monitor behaviour patterns and record daily updates
  • Support the pupil during transitions, social times and interventions

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience in SEMH, behaviour mentoring or pastoral care
  • Strong resilience, empathy and consistency
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Confidence supporting dysregulation or challenging behaviour
  • A nurturing, patient and firm approach
