Job description

Cover Supervisor – Durham Secondary Schools | Youth Worker Experience Ideal

Daily supply or long term supply, competitive daily rates (PAYE), Cover Supervisor Training Programme provided.

Do you have experience working with young people and are looking for a rewarding role within secondary schools? Have you worked as a youth worker, support worker, mentor, or community worker and want to transfer those skills into education?

Teaching Personnel is working in partnership with supportive secondary schools to recruit Cover Supervisors who can confidently engage, motivate, and support students across KS3 and KS4. This role is ideal for individuals with strong behaviour management, relationship building skills, and a genuine passion for supporting young people.

What you'll be doing:

  • Supervising classes of around 30 students in the absence of the class teacher
  • Delivering pre prepared lesson plans across a range of secondary subjects
  • Using your youth work skills to engage students and manage behaviour positively
  • Taking accurate registers and following safeguarding procedures
  • Providing clear feedback and handover notes for teaching staff

You're not expected to be a subject specialist. Your strength will be your ability to manage behaviour, communicate clearly, and support learning.

Training and Support:

If you're new to working in schools, Teaching Personnel will support you through our Cover Supervisor Training Programme, covering classroom and behaviour management strategies, safeguarding and professional expectations in schools, building positive relationships with secondary aged students, and confidence in leading a classroom setting. This makes the role an excellent step for youth workers exploring education, teacher training, or long term school based roles.

You need:

  • Experience working with young people (youth work, mentoring, support work, sports coaching, community roles, etc.)
  • Confidence leading and managing groups of young people
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Positive, calm, and consistent approach
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and a DBS (or willingness to apply)

A degree is beneficial but not essential if you have strong relevant experience.

What you get:

  • Competitive daily rates, paid weekly via PAYE
  • Guaranteed Pay Scheme (subject to availability)
  • Pension contributions
  • Ongoing CPD and professional development
  • Social and networking events
  • Dedicated secondary education consultant to support you throughout your placement

Contract: Daily supply or long term supply
Location: Durham secondary schools
