Job Advert: SEMH Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support – Year 5)

Do you have the patience, resilience, and empathy to support a pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?
We are currently looking for a dedicated and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a Year 5 pupil in a nurturing and supportive primary school setting. This is a highly rewarding opportunity for someone who is confident in building strong, trusting relationships and can provide consistent, structured emotional and academic support throughout the school day.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide personalised 1:1 support tailored to the needs of the child

Help the pupil engage positively with learning, encouraging self-regulation and confidence
-
Support the pupil both in the classroom and during less structured times of the day

Implement strategies outlined in the pupil’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behaviour Support Plan
-
Work closely with class teachers, SENCO, external agencies and parents/carers
-
Monitor and record progress, contributing to review meetings and planning
✅ The ideal candidate will have:
-
Previous experience working with children with SEMH or challenging behaviour
-
A calm, compassionate and consistent approach
-
Strong communication and de-escalation skills
-
A firm but nurturing attitude that helps build emotional resilience
-
The ability to follow structure and routine, while being flexible and responsive to the child’s needs
A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 TA qualification is desirable, as is Team Teach or similar behaviour training (though not essential if you have the right experience).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
