Location: Southport
Start date: Monday 9 November 2026
Contract: Full-time, temporary until July 2027
Hours: Monday to Friday, school hours

Teaching Personnel is working exclusively with a welcoming primary school in Southport to recruit an experienced 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant. The successful candidate will provide full-time support to a pupil in Y2 who is non-verbal, helping the child communicate, participate in lessons and become increasingly confident and independent within school.

This is a long-term position from Monday 9 November 2026 until July 2027, offering the opportunity to build a secure and consistent relationship with the pupil while becoming part of one established school team.

What Will the Role Involve?

Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team, you will:

  • Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day
  • Help the pupil access Year 2 lessons and classroom activities
  • Use the child’s agreed communication strategies
  • Support communication through visual resources, gestures, symbols or communication systems
  • Break instructions and tasks into clear, manageable stages
  • Adapt activities and resources around the pupil’s individual needs
  • Support transitions between lessons, activities and environments
  • Encourage interaction with classmates and participation in group activities
  • Support emotional regulation and provide reassurance when required
  • Promote choice, confidence and independence
  • Implement agreed EHCP outcomes and individual support strategies
  • Record relevant observations and provide feedback to the teacher and SENCO
  • Support during playtimes, lunchtimes and less-structured parts of the day
  • Provide personal care if required and in line with school procedures
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding standards

The aim is not to complete work on the pupil’s behalf, but to provide the right level of support so the child can communicate, participate and experience success.

Who Is the School Looking For?

The school would particularly like to hear from candidates with experience supporting:

  • Non-verbal or minimally verbal children
  • Autism or social-communication needs
  • Speech, language and communication needs
  • Pupils with EHCPs
  • Children requiring structured 1:1 support
  • Emotional regulation and sensory needs
  • Alternative or augmentative communication

Experience using PECS, Makaton, communication boards, visual timetables, Now and Next boards or AAC systems would be highly beneficial.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
