Teaching Assistant
Job description
Teaching Personnel are seeking dedicated and compassionate SEN Support Assistants to work full-time in SEN and SEMH schools across Wigan. This role involves supporting children and young people with a range of special educational needs and social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them to engage with learning and develop positive behaviours.
This is a rewarding role for individuals who are patient, resilient, and passionate about making a positive difference in young people’s lives.
Key Responsibilities

Provide 1:1 or small group support to pupils with SEN and/or SEMH needs
-
Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement in learning
-
Assist teachers with delivering tailored learning activities and interventions
-
Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence and wellbeing
-
Support pupils with personal care where required
-
Implement behaviour support strategies and follow individual education plans (IEPs)
-
Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
-
Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
-
Accurately record observations and progress where required

Essential Requirements
-
Experience working with children or young people with SEN and/or SEMH (school, care, youth work, or similar settings)
-
Ability to work full-time only (Monday–Friday)

A calm, patient, and resilient approach

Strong communication and teamwork skills
-
Willingness to support behaviour management and emotional needs
-
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing
Desirable (But Not Essential)
-
Previous experience in SEN or SEMH schools
-
Team Teach or behaviour management training
-
Background in care, psychology, youth work, or mental health support
-
Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
