Teaching Assistant

Monday-Friday Term Time Only

Pay: £14.30/hour

We are currently recruiting Teaching Assistants for two specialist schools settings in Portsmouth:

  • SEN settings aimed at supporting pupils with Autism, sensory needs, physical needs, complex learning needs and communication difficulties.

  • SEMH settings supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) who are dysregulated, and where strong relationships and consistent boundaries are essential.

These specific schools have structured and supportive environments in place where staff work closely as a team to help pupils achieve both academically and personally. Work with students can include both 1:1 and group work. 

The Role:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play an integral part in supporting pupils’ education, wellbeing and development. The role and responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support aimed at meeting individual learning plans

  • Adapting classroom activities to meet additional needs

  • Supporting communication and social interaction skills

  • Promoting emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies

  • Assisting with de-escalation where required, following school policies

  • Encouraging independence, confidence and engagement in learning

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral teams

Basics of the role:

In the SEN setting, there is a strong focus on structured learning, communication support and routine.

In the SEMH setting, the role involves building trust, acting as a consistent adult role model and supporting pupils to manage behaviour and emotions positively.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
