Job description

Start This Summer Term as a Student Engagement Mentor!

Location: Newport, South Wales
Pay: £92.95 per day
Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm
Contract: Rest of the Academic Year

With the Summer Term just around the corner, this is the perfect time to step into a rewarding role supporting young people in a secondary school setting, ready for September.

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Student Engagement Mentor for our partner secondary schools in Newport. This role is ideal if you’re passionate about helping young people succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally—and want hands-on experience in an education environment.

The Role: What You’ll Be Doing

As a Student Engagement Mentor, you’ll work closely with pupils who may need extra guidance, encouragement, or stability during the school day. This could include students with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), social or emotional challenges, or those who benefit from additional structure and positive role models.

Your day-to-day may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support in and out of the classroom
  • Supporting pupils with behaviour, emotional regulation, and confidence
  • Helping students stay engaged with learning and routines
  • Building trusting, positive relationships that help young people feel safe and supported

No two days are the same, and that’s what makes this role so fulfilling.

⭐ Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need to come from a school background — transferable experience matters most!

We’d love to hear from you if you’ve worked with young people through:

  • Coaching or sports leadership
  • Youth work or mentoring
  • Care or support work
  • Tutoring or classroom support
  • Camp leadership, volunteering, or similar roles

If you can demonstrate your experience and passion confidently at interview, we want to hear about it!

✅ Requirements (We’ll Help You Get These!)

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything yet — we’ll support you through the process:

  • Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service
  • EWC registration
  • Aged 18+
  • Level 2 Safeguarding training (provided during onboarding)
  • Two professional references covering a minimum of 24 months

Why This Opportunity with Teaching Personnel?

  • ✅ Weekly PAYE pay
  • ✅ Dedicated consultant to support you throughout your placement
  • ✅ Free CPD training, including safeguarding and classroom supervisor training
  • ✅ Long-term and permanent opportunities within education
  • ✅ Hands-on experience supporting young people in a school setting
  • ✅ Ideal preparation for careers in teaching, youth work, psychology, SEN/ALN, counselling, or pastoral care

Ready to Get Started?

If you’re motivated, compassionate, and ready to make a difference this Summer Term, we’d love to hear from you.
