Location: Blackburn
Setting: Specialist SEMH / SEN School
Hours: Full-time (term time only, temp)
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and resilient Sports Coach to join a specialist education setting supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and additional special educational needs.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about using sport and physical activity as a positive intervention tool to support behaviour regulation, emotional wellbeing, engagement, and personal development. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and therapists to provide structured, inclusive and therapeutic physical education experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, age‑appropriate sports and physical activity sessions tailored to individual needs
  • Use sport as a tool to promote teamwork, self‑esteem, resilience and positive behaviour
  • Support pupils who may present with challenging behaviour, emotional regulation difficulties, or trauma‑related needs
  • Adapt activities to ensure inclusion for pupils with additional learning or physical needs
  • Assist with outdoor education, enrichment activities and structured physical interventions
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and progress
  • Maintain high standards of behaviour management, safeguarding and health & safety

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience working with children or young people in SEMH, SEN, PRU, alternative provision or similar settings
  • A recognised sports coaching or physical activity qualification (desirable)
  • A calm, consistent and resilient approach
  • Strong behaviour management and communication skills
  • The ability to inspire and motivate students who may have had negative experiences of education
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people through sport

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
