Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant

Location: Skelmersdale
Contract Type: Full-time / Term Time Only
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive school in Skelmersdale. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real impact by supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs in both classroom and one-to-one settings.

You will work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO to help students overcome barriers to learning, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Promote positive behaviour and implement behaviour management strategies
  • Support pupils in developing emotional regulation and social skills
  • Assist the class teacher with lesson delivery and classroom activities
  • Create a safe, nurturing and structured learning environment
  • Build strong, supportive relationships with pupils
  • Support students during challenging moments with patience and resilience

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs is essential
  • Experience within a school setting is highly desirable
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • Patient, resilient and empathetic approach
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable learners
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g. CACHE, Level 2/3 TA, or similar) are desirable but not essential
