A popular Secondary school in Cardiff are seeking Teaching Assistants to support the needs of students aged 11-18 with Autism and a variety of other additional learning needs including Down's Syndrome, ADHD, dyslexia and PMLD on a small group and 1:1 basis.

The students attend the mainstream school but their classes are separate from mainstream and they also have a learning resource base where a majority of their learning takes place due to SEN statements. A majority of the pupils have Autism and many have co-existing conditions including ADHD, sensory processing disorder, learning disabilities, disruptive behaviour disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, tics and Tourette syndrome, epilepsy and learning disabilities. Applicants must be confident and capable of supporting pupils who have problems with communication, moving independently, eating or have sensory difficulties. You must be resilient and have the ability to work pro actively with challenging behaviour.

Class sizes are small and there will usually be a Teacher, HLTA and other Teaching Assistants in the classroom, however, you will be expected to use your own initiative and work pro actively.

You must have experience in supporting children / adults with Autism or have a close personal connection to Autism. Candidates with Team Teach or experience in PECS and / or Makaton are highly sought after.

The school have been known to appoint candidates who get on particularly well on a permanent basis.
