Special Educational Needs Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The role of the Special Educational Needs Tutor is to provide tailored educational support to pupils with a range of learning difficulties, disabilities, or additional needs. The tutor works closely with pupils to develop personalised learning plans that address individual barriers to learning, promote progress, and build confidence. This position requires the delivery of one-to-one or small group sessions, adapting teaching strategies to meet diverse learning styles and requirements. The role involves regular assessment of pupil development, maintaining accurate records, and liaising with teaching staff and parents to ensure a cohesive approach to each pupil’s education.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging and effective tutoring sessions tailored to the specific needs of pupils with special educational needs.
- Assess pupils’ learning difficulties and identify appropriate teaching methods and materials.
- Develop and implement individual education plans (IEPs) in line with the latest educational standards and requirements.
- Monitor and evaluate pupil progress, adjusting strategies to enhance learning outcomes.
- Maintain detailed records of sessions, progress reports, and any relevant observations.
- Communicate regularly with parents, carers, and educational professionals to provide updates and discuss pupil development.
- Support pupils in developing independent learning skills and strategies.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and promote a safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Stay informed about current best practises and legislation relating to special educational needs and disabilities.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification such as a recognised teaching certificate or diploma in education.
- Specialist qualification or training in special educational needs or related disciplines.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance.
Education
- A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in Education, Child Development, or a related field.
- Further training in SEN, such as a National Award for SEN Coordination or equivalent, is highly desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs.
- Experience in delivering one-to-one or small group teaching within an educational setting.
- Familiarity with a variety of learning difficulties including, but not limited to, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, and behavioural challenges.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of the SEND Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with pupils, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learning styles.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive approach to supporting learners with diverse needs.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Competence in using educational technology and resources to support learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent is advantageous.
- Additional training in behaviour management or therapeutic approaches.
- Experience working within a multi-agency framework or with external specialists.
Working Conditions
- The role is based in educational settings within Greater London, which may include schools, learning centres, or community venues.
- Work is part-time with flexible hours to accommodate pupil needs, including potential early mornings or late afternoons.
- The position is temporary, with duration dependent on funding and pupil requirements.
- The role involves direct contact with children and young people, requiring adherence to safeguarding policies at all times.
- Some travel within the Greater London area may be necessary.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
